Managed File Transfer

Managed File Transfer refers to the practice of sharing information between entities in a set format, often without human intervention. For example, in a credit card processing system, retail outlets might have an automated system that automatically uploads credit card purchases to a central point. From there, another application may batch the data together into larger files, which are transmitted to a corporate mainframe. At that point, they are received and processed by the organization's financial systems.

Although this classic implementation can fulfill basic needs, it also poses severe limitations. The most crucial of these stem from the simple batch-style processing outlined above which, although easy to understand and implement, has not necessarily been feature-rich in terms of workflow, security and so on. Today, new compliance requirements such as PCI and Sarbanes-Oxley call for every process to be secure, documented, auditable, and accountable, including those business processes that incorporate or leverage MFT.
